Fall Skincare Essentials by @chooseyourglow

As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler, I always get excited as the fall season arrives. While I love summer days poolside with the girls soaking up the sun (lathered up in SPF of course!), I am ready to trade my ice cream dates for coffee dates and nights cuddled up on the couch watching movies. As I get ready for this transition, I find myself not just swapping out my wardrobe and décor, but also my skincare.

I am all for glowy, dewy, and radiant, but NEVER a fan of greasy. My summer skincare routine usually includes extra exfoliation, a lighter moisturizer & lots of SPF. To help combat the extra production of oil I will exfoliate 3-4 times a week with a gentle exfoliant to help cleanse my pores of any build-up that often leads to breakouts. I still moisturize religiously during the hot months, but I opt for a lighter, oil-free moisturizer that will nourish my skin but won’t clog my pores. Just like I adjust my routine for warmer weather, I make some key changes when fall rolls around to better help my skin adapt to the lower temperatures.

While the Central Valley doesn’t get below freezing there is a dramatic temperature change for us from summer to fall, making my skin much more dehydrated and sensitive. When your skin is sensitive, it needs products with both humectant and occlusive properties to lock in moisture and create a protective barrier. In comparison, in the summer your skin produces more natural oils which help create a protective barrier on its own.

If you are like me and find your skin sensitive, dry and dehydrated, your skin might need a thicker cream to help support your barrier. I prefer to use moisturizers that include ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or glycerin that both nourish the skin while giving it an extra boost of deep hydration. I also recommend moisturizing within 1 minute of washing your face or showering while your skin is still damp. This will prevent trans-epidermal water loss from taking place, which is when water evaporates from your skin and is much more common in the colder months.

If there is one product that should stay consistent from summer to fall it is sunscreen. People often think UV rays can’t penetrate clouds, however, that is a big myth! UVA rays can easily penetrate clouds and glass which are the main culprit for cell damage and premature aging. I will never forget one summer in Hawaii when I was 12, I skipped sunscreen because it was partly overcast that day, and ended up with one of the most painful sunburns. NEVER AGAIN. An SPF I love using in fall is one with hydrating properties for an extra boost.

Below are some skincare products I am loving for the fall. I have combination, acne-prone, and sensitive skin and all of these products have been wonderful! I also included my favorite silk face mask. The material is softer & more gentle on the skin compared to disposable or cotton masks which often causes irritation and the not so forgivable maskne.
